September is World Fun Fair Month and we want to know more about what it’s all about.
World Fun Fair Month was started by Future 4 Fairgrounds in 2020 by ‘6 lady showmen’. Creating this special month is a great way to recognise how important fairs are to communities and to celebrate how wonderful the Showmen are that run them. Showmen are keeping alive a tradition that has been with us for hundreds of years. The Future 4 Fairgrounds stated aim was to unite Showmen from around the world to celebrate all aspects of the fairgrounds. They involved showmen from the UK, Europe, North America, and Australasia to ensure the event was truly global.
Nottingham Goose Fair and Hull Fair are some of the largest fairs in the UK and really transform those cities for the days that they run bringing lights and excitement. Nottingham Goose Fair takes place this year on 30 Sept to 9 October at the Forest Recreation Ground. Hull Fair starts on the 7th October and ends on Saturday 15th Oct. Hull Fair is 700 years old, older even than some of our Acer insurance brokers. It takes place on Walton Street and will have all the old favourites such as the dodgems, waltzers and carousels as well as new and exciting rides to thrill the crowd. Listen out for how a Hull local pronounces ‘Hook-a-Duck’!
Loughborough Fair is said to be the UK’s oldest fair with a charter in 1221. It takes place in November.
Join in the excitement of World Fun Fair Month and put a date in the diary to visit a local fair this Autumn or even a Winter event such as the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. If you have a friend who has never been to a fun fair, invite them along! Celebrate all the fun of the fair.
